Questions

Frequently asked questions

Is workers' comp required for a one-person Florida contractor?

Yes, in most cases. Florida construction employers with as few as one employee must carry workers’ comp. Even working alone, many GCs require workers’ comp on your COI before allowing you on site. FishHawk Insurance Center gets you compliant fast, including same-day coverage for Stop-Work Orders.

What GL limits do Tampa GCs typically require from subcontractors?

Most Tampa GCs require $1M per occurrence / $2M aggregate minimum. Larger commercial or government projects often require $2M/$4M. GCs also typically require additional insured status and specific COI language. FishHawk Insurance Center reviews your subcontract requirements before you bind to make sure every field is right.

How quickly can you issue a COI for a new project?

Once your policy is bound, a COI can be issued the same day, often within the hour. Call 813-776-1542 with the certificate holder’s name, address, and any additional insured or description-of-operations language your GC requires. For urgent needs, always call rather than email.

Do I need a surety bond in addition to insurance?

Yes, they serve completely different purposes. Insurance protects you against losses. A surety bond protects the other party if you fail to perform or comply with licensing requirements. Most Florida contractor licenses require a CILB bond. Most public projects require performance and payment bonds. FishHawk Insurance Center handles all bond types.

Can FishHawk help with an active Stop-Work Order?

Absolutely, and time is critical. Florida DFS fines accumulate at $1,000/day or 2× the annual workers’ comp premium. Call 813-776-1542 immediately. FishHawk Insurance Center treats SWOs as emergencies and can often get coverage bound and the resolution process started the same day.
